Past Research Interests

HIV Pathogenesis and Prevention Research:

  • Protocol co-chair of CAPRISA002 Study: Understanding the immunological, viral and clinical  events that occur during acute HIV infection.
  • Site Principal Investigator for HIV Vaccine Trial Network (HVTN) 503 Study.
  • Site Project Director of the CAPRISA004 landmark trial of 1% Tenofovir microbicide gel in high risk women.

Current Research Interests

  • Rapid TB diagnostics and  drug susceptibility testing.
  • Characteristics of multidrug resistant human pathogens.



Prof Koleka Mlisana, MBChB, MMedPath(Micro) is the associate professor and Head of Medical Microbiology Dept at the Univ of KwaZulu Natal(UKZN) and National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS), Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH) Academic Complex. Her research focus is now in drug resistant TB as well as other infectious diseases. She was previously a co-investigator and Project Director of the CAPRISA 004 tenofovir gel trial at the eThekwini site as well as the Head of HIV Pathogenesis and Vaccine research at the Centre for the AIDS Programme of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA).
