The HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) is passionate about promoting and developing a love for science and technology in high school learners.
On 2 August 2023, HPP offered an opportunity for 14 students currently in Grade 11 or 12 at Umlazi Senior Secondary School to gain work experience. These pupils are considering careers in science, administration and information technology. The learners were able to shadow laboratory technologists, administrators, data managers, researchers, lecturers and postgraduate students to find out more about what these positions entail.
The day started with a warm welcome, introduction to HPP and a fascinating glimpse into HIV research by HPP Scientific Director, Professor Thumbi Ndung’u. The students were then split into two groups and the work experience began in earnest. Presentations were given on information technology, administration, ethics co-ordination, and grant administration followed by vigorous discussion.
The highlight of the day for the learners was a tour of the laboratory facilities, including actual experiments involving liquid nitrogen, as well as time in the sequencing laboratory. The absorbed look on the pupils’ faces and the challenging questions asked left no doubt that they were thoroughly enjoying the experience.
Lunch was hosted by two UKZN lecturers and HPP faculty members, Drs Bongiwe Ndlovu and Nompumelelo Mkhwanazi, giving learners an opportunity to ask questions about research and academia, followed by the presentation of certificates.
It is hoped that this work experience benefitted the learners by offering practical experience and insight into the typical duties and responsibilities of the different positions at HPP, thereby helping them decide on their future careers. It was a great privilege and honour to host these learners and share the amazing world of science with them.
